Michael A. Lazaro
Welcome

Peleliu was a bloody battle fought during World War II. Today, the battle is forgotten by many people. To us, the battle is significant because our uncle, Michael A. Lazaro, died on Peleliu.

This site began as a tribute to Michael. However, as we learned about the other veterans and they shared their stories with us, the site evolved into a tribute to all the veterans of Peleliu.

March 2007 Update:

In January 2007, the Peleliu War Historical Society completed the installation of air conditioning at the Peleliu War Museum on Peleliu. The air conditioning units contribute to climate control withint the museum and the life of the artifacts and other memorabilia. For more details about the project, please visit our "Latest News" page.

The Peleliu War Historical Society is also proud to announce that their plan to preserve the Peleliu Battlefield, with help from the National Park Service, continues to move forward. The Peleliu War Historical Society released the following update February, 2007:

We received notification today from the National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program concurring in the selection of Cultural Resource Management Services to complete a preservation plan for the Peleliu Battlefield. The Project Manager is Nancy Farrell who has extensive experience with Pacific WWII battlefield sites who will be teaming up, with among others Dr. Stephen Murray, who has lived in Palau and recently completed his PhD dissertation on Peleliu and the memories of the war.

We were extraordinarily fortunate to have a response of highly qualified proposals and much of the credit should be given to the often forgotten Peleliu, which along with its present challenges make it important that our work be done right and with respect for all involved. Our goal will be able to leave a lasting legacy for the future while respecting the rights and honor of the Peleliu people.
