Organization Created to Protect Peleliu Battlefield

In August 2005 the Peleliu War Historical Society, a non-profit corporation was formed for preservation and protection of the battle sites and museum on the island of Peleliu. Peleliu was the longest and one of the most hard-fought battles of the Pacific War. Despite this, even today little is widely known about the battle and its cost.

In 1985 the National Park Service created the Peleliu Battlefield National Historic Landmark, since then little in the way of tangible measures has been taken to protect the island from damage or looting. Seabees from Guam periodically perform basic maintenance to the monuments and museum.

The Historical Society’s Board is comprised of broad mix of archaeologists, Palauans, battlefield experts, a Peleliu veteran and Peleliu veteran’s son. These members include, Col. Otto Melsa (Ret), Jim Pilkingtion, Tangie Hesus, Francis Matsutaro, Dr. Rick Knecht, Fran Seager-Boss, Vickie Cole and Steve Cypra. The Board members serve without any compensation.

The group’s initial goals are resolving boundary issues which stalled efforts by the Park Service to implement greater protection for the battlefield. Other objectives include improving the island’s museum and protecting its artifacts, and constructing a small reception center for visitors arriving on the island explaining the history and regulations for visiting sites. Another objective will provide limited trail access with signage for visitors and veterans; foremost will be protecting sites and monuments from any further damage.

The organization has recently submitted its IRS tax-deductible application which is currently pending review and is expected to be approved later this spring. Donations may be sent to the organization, along with any inquiries to:
